Option 1: The Scenic West Coast Road
Total Distance: Approximately 175 km Estimated Travel Time: About 2 hours
- From Cape Town, take the R27 (West Coast Road) northbound.
- Pass through Melkbosstrand and continue along the coastline.
- You’ll drive through several charming West Coast towns, including Yzerfontein and Langebaan.
- After passing Langebaan, continue on the R27 until you reach Velddrif.
- In Velddrif, turn right onto Voortrekker Road, which becomes Harbor Road.
- Follow Harbor Road until you reach Port Owen Drive.
- Turn left onto Port Owen Drive and follow it to Skoenlapper Guesthouse.
Advantages:
- Scenic coastal views for most of the journey
- Opportunity to stop at interesting coastal towns along the way
Considerations:
- Can be busier with traffic, especially during peak holiday seasons
- Coastal weather can sometimes bring mist, reducing visibility
Option 2: The Inland Route via Malmesbury
Total Distance: Approximately 185 km Estimated Travel Time: About 2 hours
- From Cape Town, take the N1 northbound.
- Take the R302 exit toward Malmesbury.
- In Malmesbury, take the R45 northbound toward Hopefield.
- Pass through Hopefield, enjoying the charming Swartland scenery.
- Continue on the R45 past the Saldanha Bay Airport.
- The R45 will take you directly into Velddrif.
- In Velddrif, turn left onto Voortrekker Road, which becomes Harbor Road.
- Follow Harbor Road until you reach Port Owen Drive.
- Turn left onto Port Owen Drive and follow it to Skoenlapper Guesthouse.
Advantages:
- Generally less traffic, making for a smoother drive
- Avoids potential coastal mist and overcast weather
- Scenic route through the Swartland region
Considerations:
- Slightly longer distance, but often quicker due to less traffic
- Fewer coastal views, but charming inland scenery
Tips for Your Journey:
- Both routes offer fuel stations and rest stops along the way.
- The inland route via Malmesbury is recommended if you prefer a quieter drive or if coastal weather looks unfavorable.
- Regardless of your chosen route, we recommend leaving Cape Town with a full tank of fuel.
- There are speed cameras along both routes, so please adhere to speed limits.
- If time allows, both routes offer interesting stops. On the coastal route, consider Yzerfontein or Langebaan. On the inland route, Hopefield is a charming town to explore.
